Facebook’s Hiring Strategies

photo by webmission09This Friday, a movie called The Social Network will hit theaters. This movie is a depiction of The Accidental Billionaires author’s view of the events that led to the founding of Facebook, which has risen to become the world’s 4th largest website. But, as all of us who work in the world of recruiting know, a company does not achieve this kind of success without some pretty awesome employees. So, we decided to check out how Facebook has staffed itself to reach this kind of online domination. We caught up with Richard Cho, one of the Recruiting Leads at Facebook, to find out what they’ve been doing to attract talent there and grow with some pretty impressive numbers.

#SourceCon Live: Hewitt’s Global Sourcing Lessons

Chris Gould and Tim O’Connor have built a successful global sourcing function at Hewitt Associates. But they didn’t get where they are today by not taking chances or making some mistakes along the way. They graciously shared with us at SourceCon some of the learning lessons along the way that helped them reach the success levels they’re at today.

Three years ago, Gould shared that they were structured as a full cycle recruiting team. He said that they outsourced a lot of the sourcing tasks, they didn’t track metrics, the technology was lacking, basically they had a lot of things that needed to be changed in order to grow. His vision was to make drastic changes and bring sourcing to a centralized, internal function in order to accomplish three hiring goals – increase quality, increase quantity, and decrease cost. In order to do this, Gould started with defining the sourcing roles – what would the responsibilities be, where hand offs would occur, instilling a culture of teamwork and not individualism, measuring results, etc. Team effort would help everyone focus on getting the fundamentals right and would create the unity needed in order for the sourcing efforts to go global.

#SourceCon Live: Cryptology and Sourcing

Jeff Eveler was a Cryptographic Field Engineer before becoming a technical recruiter. He has been working in this field now for over 30 years and has applied his background in cryptology to the art and science of sourcing. So how does cryptology fit into this world? We learned how during Eveler’s presentation on Tuesday afternoon.

Cryptology, by definition, is the practice and study of hiding information. A good cryptologist is not only good at hiding information, he/she is also good at uncovering it. It is imperative to pay close attention to details when sniffing out hidden data; it can be a tiring task and is not for the faint of heart. Eveler mentioned the word “vigilance” when referring to what makes a good sourcer. This means watchfulness, the process of paying close and continuous attention. As a way of being vigilant in sourcing, he shared with the room a way to map out talent intelligence, broken down into eight categories.

#SourceCon Live: Glen Cathey

“Boolean search doesn’t do what we do justice. It doesn’t describe everything that we are capable of.” Glen Cathey kicked things off at SourceCon letting us know that there is so much more to sourcing than just writing good Boolean strings.  Cathey’s keynote session focused on five different levels of sourcing and how they are an important part of a sourcer’s toolkit in order to become successful in finding quality candidates.

Cathey presented a “face off” battle for control of information between phone sourcing and data mining. Some of the scenarios presented were location, experience and education, and desired opportunity. The point being made from this demonstration was summed up beautifully by Cathey – “Data is not perfect.” However – we as sourcers strive for some predictability when it comes to what we seek – and that’s the point that Cathey made throughout his presentation.

“Success in life comes from the identification, control, and elimination of variables.”

On Tuesday, the sourcing world turns their attention to Washington, DC as SourceCon kicks off from the International Spy Museum.

There are still some spots left if you can make it in person - you can register online. I don’t think anyone can argue that there is a more fitting venue at which to host the premier sourcing event than the spy museum.

But if you can’t make it in person, you can still catch much of the great content by catching the live stream carried at www.sourcecon.com.

SourceCon gets started tomorrow, September 28 at 12:00 p.m. ET and continues on Wednesday. You can find the full schedule of sessions here.

You can watch the stream online right here on the SourceCon homepage, participate in the live chat, and follow the event on Twitter using the #SourceCon hashtag.

There is nothing to install – just go to www.sourcecon.com on Tuesday about 10 minutes before we start, and you will see the uStream box. Just click the ‘play’ button and you are all set!

Look Beyond The Obvious

As researchers and sourcers, we are tasked with generating leads for our recruiting colleagues or our clients. But, as the slogan goes for my favorite childhood toy, there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to what we can do.

We need to look beyond the obvious – in more ways than one.

From Shannon Myers – My Memories of #SourceCon

Shannon Myers

With the conference just a few short days away, I am reminded of my first experience at SourceCon. I am excited to be able to attend this year and preparing for my presentation has reminded me what things I love most about the event.

My introduction to SourceCon came after listening to a Recruiting Animal show where he interviewed Josh Kahn, one of the Challenge winners. After some exploration, I won the last Challenge less than a few months before the 2008 event. I was a little nervous about the Grandmaster Challenge, but the first evening I arrived I knew right away this conference was going to be different.
