You’ve all heard the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” Well, we aim to shake up that notion at SourceCon this year. Just because something “ain’t broke” doesn’t mean it can’t be improved upon. For our opening keynote, Megan Holte, Sourcing and Pipeline Manager with ADP, will share how she and her team “broke” their model — which was functioning just fine — in order to reach a new level of excellence in sourcing.

In our pocast chat, Holte shares how, even though their team was effective, there were areas in which they could certainly improve. The changes the sourcing team has made over the last year or so has led to them nearly quadrupling their productivity, and her team has nearly doubled in size. What manager wouldn’t want to see that?

LinkedIn Makes It Official: It’s Going Public

LinkedIn did the expected today. It announced it was going public.

The privately held company filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission saying it intended to list on either the NASDAQ or the New York Stock Exchange. No initial offering price was listed, nor was the intended number of shares to be sold.

That LinkedIn was preparing for an initial public offering has long been rumored. Earlier this month Reuters said the company had been meeting with financial institutions and would begin offering shares this year.

The company has multiple shareholders, including founder Reid Hoffman and his wife who own 21.4 percent of the private stock, and three venture capital companies.

In its SEC filing LinkedIn reported it has been growing revenue rapidly. For the first nine months of 2010, the company had $161.4 million in revenue, twice the revenue for the first nine months of 2009. It also posted a $10.1 million profit through the end of September versus a loss of $3.4 million for the first nine months of 2009.

In a 1963 speech, John F. Kennedy said, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” He was referencing the economy, and this quote has been used in support of many an economic initiative since. I work for a PR agency, and a couple of years ago I emailed a VP from a competitor agency to ask if he knew any good analyst relations candidates. We were looking for more junior level folks, so I wasn’t trying to recruit him, but thought it couldn’t hurt to ask. He replied that if he did know any, he’d obviously hire them first if he had a spot for them, but that he’d be happy to send them my way if he didn’t. This was exactly what I’d hoped he’d say. He followed that with, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” I had never heard this quote used to apply to a general profession, but I understood that he was inferring that helping each other hire the best talent is in the best interest of the analyst relations profession as a whole. I love that attitude, as it mirrors the way I think about sourcing.

Even though we are in an economic down cycle and unemployment in the U.S. is hovering around 10%, recruiters are still struggling to find people with the skills and experience their hiring managers are looking for.

Partly this is driven by the commonly held assumption that these skilled and experienced people have been affected by the recession and are actually in the job market. Recruiters know this is not the case and that many candidates have become even more difficult to find and entice away from a secure position.

While demand for lesser-experienced, educated, and skilled candidates has slacked, it has risen for those with higher-level skills. Many firms are trying to replace the employees they had with moderate skills or who were in learning roles, with people already accomplished in their profession.

Recruiting is a job that has essentially defined multitasking. On any given requisition, a recruiter must find time to source several candidates, make follow-up phone calls, and connect with hiring managers. The Web has already proven to be an indispensable time-saver for sourcing and screening, especially with the explosive expansion of social media sites and services.

Yet, the task of dredging through the massive repository of information the Web can be daunting. Thankfully, there is a new search tool in development that has the potential to help recruiters collect and compile candidate information in a much more timely fashion.

Okay, so you can find free resumes on the Internet.  So what? What’s the big deal?  The fact that the Internet is free? While free is nice and certainly can’t be argued with, I am sure you have also heard that you get what you pay (or don’t pay) for. Or if it’s too good to be true – it is.

So let’s take a look at what you get for free on the Internet:

Quora For Sourcers

It seems that the whole world is a-buzz about this new website called Quora. Every day for the past week or so, I have at least fifteen new emails in my inbox with notifications that so-and-so has started following me on Quora. My first introduction to Quora was back in August of 2010, when a local friend and social media buff, Tac Anderson, sent me an email inviting me to check it out — “You should really check this site out. I’m liking it a lot.” I received a couple other invitations to join, with comments like “Just thought you’d be a good contributor to Quora content and all” and “Thought you might be interested in questions and answers about Recruiters, Hiring, and Social Recruiting.”

I should have listened sooner.
