Organizing Your Growing Sourcing Team

Org effectiveness

When you’re working in an organization where there are more than five recruiters who need sourcing support, it’s probably a good time to expand your research team! Any good sourcer will tell you that they can effectively support 2 – 6 active recruiters on their own. Any more than that and you’re getting stretched pretty thin. I couldn’t agree more!

Here are some ideas to help you determine the best working structure for your sourcing team as it continues to grow and thrive. These ideas are the compilation of consultation with seasoned sourcers who have developed successful sourcing teams within their companies.

Melbourne Hosts Second Sourcing Event in Australia for 2011

ATC2011

It’s been just over a week since ATC SourcEvent 2011 in Melbourne, Australia.  I originally intended to post up something a lot sooner, but there was just so much information to digest (not to mention the amount of work I had on my desk that I needed to catch up on) that I decided to take some time out for it to all settle in. The story continues…

Australia’s second sourcing event was hosted by the Australasian Talent Conference. Since 2007, they have been a key driver in providing Australasia with the latest buzz and best practices in recruitment. As you’d expect, their attendees normally consist of recruiters (in-house, agency, and executive search) and this year’s inaugural sourcing event did not disappoint. This offered an excellent opportunity for the greater recruitment community to learn more about sourcing and the benefits it can bring to the business.

Hardcore Sourcing: An Interview with Mike Notaro

Some might say that Sourcing is the kind of profession that attracts the passionate; fanatics, devotees, and life-long learners.

Take Mike Notaro, for example.

He was winner of the AIRS Extreme Sourcing Challenge in 2007, and in 2007 and and 2008 he was crowned the Sourcecon Grandmaster.

“Hardcore” is the word that comes to mind. Mike is known for sourcing innovation, and feels strongly about exploring new ideas, tactics, and tools:

Things are changing and evolving so rapidly that it’s nearly impossible to stay with the curve, let alone get ahead of it. With so much going on, you should really have something new almost every day to talk about with your colleagues and co-workers. (SourceCon, April 2010)

Automation 201 is the theme of Mike’s SourceCon presentation – a follow-up to his 2010 SourceCon presentation. I’m pretty certain we will all benefit from his passion and learn something new in Silicon Valley.

Anatomy of a Sourcing Leader: Tito Magobet

On October 13, SourceCon will kick off with a keynote presentation from Tito Magobet. Tito was most recently Manager, Global Talent Sourcing for Research in Motion (RIM); I first met Tito at Microsoft in 2003 – we started the same day. Within months, Tito developed a reputation as a brilliant, hardworking sourcer. Since Microsoft, Tito has built a career as a sourcing leader at an enviable list of companies, including Google and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Tito’s keynote will focus on building actionable talent intelligence strategies. There are probably fewer than a dozen experts on this topic in the world. I asked Tito a few questions about his career and leadership style. His responses reveal a thoughtful, passionate, committed sourcing professional.

Google+: The Holy Grail of Sourcing?

I’ve taken a while to weigh in on Google+, partially because I simply haven’t had time to play with it, and partially because quite honestly I think I’ve hit my fatigue level with social networks. And I suspect I’m not alone in that.

Don’t get me wrong, I immediately notice the relevance to branding, learning, and knowledge sharing. Those are no-brainers. And if Google ever opens up Plus to its Apps customers (we here at ERE Media are customers), I’ll happily hop on the bandwagon because I think it’ll give SocialCast and Yammer a run for their money for private network communication and sharing.

But for sourcing and recruiting? Well, I needed to take it for a test drive myself before making a comprehensive assessment.

The Australasian Sourcing Summit: Another Point of View

In December 2007, inspired by gatherings of sourcers overseas and groups like the Association of Executive Search Consultants, I started a local group for sourcers in Australia and New Zealand. At the time, sourcing in Australia was a fairly new phenomenon. The group was set up as a place for people who loved Internet search to get together to talk about topics such as new techniques, challenges, and innovation. I also wanted to see sourcing become known as a viable career path in the recruitment industry and treated like the specialist role that it is rather than a support role.

So this year when I was approached by Phillip Tusing of Destination Talent to help him organise an event around sourcing I jumped at the chance. The industry here has grown a lot in the five years since I started working in it and there is currently quite a bit of interest in sourcing as well as some successful sourcing throughout the country.

There was a diverse range of topics covered throughout the event. Looking back I had to ask myself what do Gollum, Kanban walls, and Charlie Sheen have to do with sourcing, as they all got mentions. These topics and more are really indicative of the holistic focus the event had. More on that later…

There were a couple of presentations in particular that, when combined, seem to cover the broad range of sourcing.

Getting to know Knod.es: A Quick Way to Search Your Networks

It’s eminent that recruiters make the best networkers. Being the face of a company and telling its story to potential prospects is part of our vocation. Attending job fairs, networking events, and mixers allow us to mingle with passive candidates and offers exposure to the community.

With Recruitment 3.0, social networking allows us to have access to millions of people and lets us easily grow our talent pipeline. Today, we spend the majority of our day searching for candidates on the most popular social media sites. LinkedIn has become our playground and building our network is an absolute necessity.

Without a doubt, recruiters should be the most connected users on LinkedIn or any other social media site. I actually feel bad for my non-recruiting friends as their LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter feeds have become over-saturated with my latest connections, job announcements, and recruiting news articles.

The words “sourcing” and “hiring” have become part of my friend’s vocabulary. I love reading their responses to my social media updates:

Obviously, my status updates and constant jabber about sourcing has become a little obnoxious to others. As a result, I stumbled upon a new site that makes it easy to reach out to your entire social network without status updates or blasting a tweet.

Knod.es, product of SnapGoods, is a new site that searches your LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook connections that are most likely to have an answer to your question or topic.

How to Get Your Boss to Let You Come to SourceCon: Making a Case to Attend

SourceCon

Obviously I’m biased, but I think SourceCon is the best, most comprehensive sourcing conference out there. Why? Well, I’ll bet you didn’t know that while I’ve been in charge of the SourceCon website/newsletter for four years now, I did so from 2007-2010 on a voluntary basis. That’s right — I believed in the mission and purpose of SourceCon so much that I did it for free for three years — in addition to working full-time. I think that anyone who touches sourcing in a recruitment organization can stand to benefit from being amongst other sourcing professionals and learning in a collaborative environment such as the kind provided at the SourceCon conferences.

And it even says on the event site — there’s something for everyone. There will be high-level leadership sessions, tactical hands-on workshops, and new tool introductions to satisfy everyone from the greenest sourcer to the most seasoned veteran; from the ‘lone wolf’ individual contributor to the global sourcing leader.

But since I know my (biased) opinion simply isn’t enough, I want to provide you with some tools to help make a compelling case to your boss to attend the conference. In your heart, I know that you understand the value of attending SourceCon — but I also know that it isn’t always easy to convey that understanding to your higher-ups.

Software 101: A Guide to Web-Based Applicant Tracking Systems

The process of reviewing resumes, interviewing candidates, and hiring & on-boarding is time-consuming. When searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack, keeping organized should be easier. Thankfully, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Due largely in part to the emergence of web-based Software as a Service (SaaS), organizations of any size and budget can tap into feature-rich web-based applicant tracking software (ATS) and streamline their hiring processes.

As an alternative to traditional desktop systems, web-based software as a service puts big-time functionality at recruiting professionals’ disposal without the upfront expense of desktop implementations.

If you think you may be ready to get rid of your Rolodex and clear that stack of resumes off of your desk, here’s what you should know…
