The Importance of Trust In Sourcing

ALawrenceSCN2012aTL

Could you imagine a life without trust?  What about a career without trust? Or even a relationship without trust? Trust is a huge component of civilization. Trust is what defines relationships and it’s an imperative module in our industry. Adam Lawrence defined it in his keynote presentation: “Trust is the new ROI.”

As sourcers, we are always looking for new technology and tools to lead us to our next placement; those are the hard skills that drive creativity and innovation in our industry. There will always be buzz in the sourcing community on who is using the latest shiny new tool, or who discovered the new Boolean technique, or who found the new stalker site. But seldom do we talk about the soft skills that define who we really are. Trust is and should be the foundation of our industry.

The Australian Sourcing Industry Is Getting Serious…

A spectre is haunting our industry – the spectre of sourcing. Too long have we spent time under the shadow of recruiters, under the guise of recruitment. Fellow sourcers, I am tired of having to explain our value-add to people who just don’t get it, to justify our worth to businesses who simply aren’t interested in moving beyond the status quo, and I am tired of having to validate our very existence.

Right now, as we’re starting to gain some real visibility, it is time for us to properly define ourselves and consolidate ourselves as a unified industry. The community has its eyes on us and it’s up to us to show them who we are, beyond recruitment, marketing, or a PR piece, and to carve out our own future.

Sourcer OR Recruiter: A Classic Title Dilemma in India

When I began my sourcing career, I was working in a recruitment setup where the sourcing team used to support the recruiters with resumes.

This means that whenever there was a new requirement raised, the sourcer had to understand the requirement and then accordingly write the job postings and get the right resume from the right source and ensure that a basic HR screening is done, which included getting a better understanding of candidates’ interest in a position, their reason for change, experience, education, CTC, notice period, and other details. After this, we would pass on the resume to the recruiter.

Melbourne Hosts Second Sourcing Event in Australia for 2011

ATC2011

It’s been just over a week since ATC SourcEvent 2011 in Melbourne, Australia.  I originally intended to post up something a lot sooner, but there was just so much information to digest (not to mention the amount of work I had on my desk that I needed to catch up on) that I decided to take some time out for it to all settle in. The story continues…

Australia’s second sourcing event was hosted by the Australasian Talent Conference. Since 2007, they have been a key driver in providing Australasia with the latest buzz and best practices in recruitment. As you’d expect, their attendees normally consist of recruiters (in-house, agency, and executive search) and this year’s inaugural sourcing event did not disappoint. This offered an excellent opportunity for the greater recruitment community to learn more about sourcing and the benefits it can bring to the business.

The Australasian Sourcing Summit: Another Point of View

In December 2007, inspired by gatherings of sourcers overseas and groups like the Association of Executive Search Consultants, I started a local group for sourcers in Australia and New Zealand. At the time, sourcing in Australia was a fairly new phenomenon. The group was set up as a place for people who loved Internet search to get together to talk about topics such as new techniques, challenges, and innovation. I also wanted to see sourcing become known as a viable career path in the recruitment industry and treated like the specialist role that it is rather than a support role.

So this year when I was approached by Phillip Tusing of Destination Talent to help him organise an event around sourcing I jumped at the chance. The industry here has grown a lot in the five years since I started working in it and there is currently quite a bit of interest in sourcing as well as some successful sourcing throughout the country.

There was a diverse range of topics covered throughout the event. Looking back I had to ask myself what do Gollum, Kanban walls, and Charlie Sheen have to do with sourcing, as they all got mentions. These topics and more are really indicative of the holistic focus the event had. More on that later…

There were a couple of presentations in particular that, when combined, seem to cover the broad range of sourcing.

Sourcers Gather in Sydney, Australia for Australasian Sourcing Summit

Last week, Phil Tusing of Destination Talent and Andrea Mitchell, founder of the Australasian Researchers Network, hosted the inaugural Australasian Sourcing Summit (#sosu11) in Sydney, Australia. The two-day event featured a number of sourcing thought leaders from Australia and New Zealand and attracted researchers alike from across Australia as well as our colleagues from across the Tasman. For most of the event I was busy networking, writing notes, tweeting, and trying my hand at live-blogging! It suffices to say that the buzz around the event was electrifying and there was much love in the room…unlike the adoption rate of Google Wave

Over the course of two days, a broad range of topics from some notable speakers were covered on issues stemming from: hands on sourcing strategies, sourcing metrics and accountability (a HOT topic), leveraging the phone, talent attraction and social media, amongst others. Throughout the event, I noticed there were some very salient themes that kept cropping up:

  • Social Branding + Sourcing
  • Sourcing Metrics
  • Sourcing Strategy

Best Practices for the Creation of a Successful Sourcing Model

teamwork by Scott Maxwell

The concept of sourcing in the recruitment ‘supply chain’ is evolving in the current technology and social media age. One thing that defines the success of the evolving concept is how you fit this piece of puzzle into your entire picture. Creating an additional layer in the recruitment process has its own pros and cons. Thus it is more important to make sure the theoretical success of the sourcing model brings “practical” success numbers into your process.

Based on what I’ve found has worked for my employer, let’s review the vital things we need to consider while adding a “Sourcing” layer into your recruitment process. These suggestions are things we’ve added to the general flow of our recruiting process and have help us to achieve success on behalf of the whole team.

Sourcing and Social Media Censorship in China

“Everything that helps information flow is good for society.”

Words spoken by Wang Xing, founder of the site known today as RenRen, a Chinese Facebook “clone.” Yet RenRen blocks its users from sharing links to certain competitors in social and group-buying (it owns Nuomi.com, one of China’s best-known group buying websites) by returning the error message: “Posting failed, this news contains unsuitable content, please review it,” when users attempt to post a link to sites like Meituan or Mi Liao, for example.

On May 4, 2011, RenRen went public in the NYSE, listing as RENN and raising $743.4 million in the first hours of its IPO. Since that day, RENN value has plummeted by over 50%.

Recently, news came out that Hong Kong-Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo will soon launch in English, making it a potential rival to Twitter. And we, of course, are interested in a potential stir-up…

China: Social Media and Sourcing

ChinaSocialMedia

Arguably the three most influential players in the online social media space, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, are not available in China due to strict government censorship laws. According to various stats from Randstad and Wikipedia, the Internet penetration rate in the Middle Kingdom is about 33%. It is increasing ever so rapidly with 83% of the Chinese workforce believing that social media is the way to go towards finding a new job. As a result, there has been a mushrooming of local social media sites that are compliant with Chinese media regulation.

Eventually, her career path took her to one of the most recognizable names in the entertainment business — she joined Cirque du Soleil as a Talent Management Advisor and began pursuing a career as a sourcer with their newly created sourcing function.
