Here is this Tuesday’s Phone Sourcing Tip. It is also listed in the ASK Maureen group on ERE.

I hope you’ll join and contribute to our discussion!

Much of phone sourcing is like taking a test.

If you hit a lot of headwind at one company skip to the next.

Don’t get hung up and don’t let it discourage you.

So here we are on the second day of the onsite MagicMethod phone sourcing training.

We’re about to embark on the actual calling that is an integral part of the training.

It’s 8:15 a.m and my MagicMethod student and I are all cozy sitting next to one another in his cubicle with his phone and his screen before us with his worksheet pulled up .

It’s an Excel doc. Remember, I had asked everyone, the day before, to set the following day’s work up in Word.

I work in Word because it’s easy to manage and I can easily navigate it when I’m on the phone; filling it with notes and information from each call.

I find Excel exceedingly jumpy and confusing and the last thing I need when I’m on the phone is to become flustered because I can’t handle the document in front of me.

Handling Gatekeepers is hard enough.

Asking more than one question at a time (or giving out too much information) overwhelms most Gatekeepers.

Identifying yourself immediately on the call goes a long way toward “removing the mystery” for the Gatekeeper. It is not necessary to state the company you’re calling from/on behalf or nor is it necessary to state the reason for your call. A simple acknowledgment of her name (if she tells you when she answers) and your name will many times get the job done!

“What’s thorough sourcing?” you ask.

“We’re doing that!” you hope think.

Are you?

Thorough sourcing is when you are confident you have everyone inside a specific company (or companies) that you can contact for your open opportunity.

It’s when you have a list of names along with their titles (and hopefully their direct dials!) that you can sit down and call through and pitch your position to.

Many of you are dealing with some very hard-to-fill positions.

Candidates are not answering your ads.

They’re ignoring your social media call-outs.

You’re not finding enough of them on the job boards and when you do find them on LinkedIn you can’t get in touch with many of them or they don’t answer your e-mails.

You’re not taking things far enough.

The Taxonomy of Sourcing Types

I presented at the SourceCon 2011 event in New York on February 8. It was my first SourceCon event and I enjoyed the opportunity to meet interesting people and “feel the learn” as Shally put it.

I have some observations about sourcing as a result of talking to many people there and watching the presentations of others. My idea was to put on my “management consultant” hat and make some suggestions that I think could advance the body of knowledge as the “sourcing” function attempts to step out and create an independent identity and “community” affinity.

People used terms like “sourcing industry” and “sourcing profession.” However, from what I could see, the term “sourcer” has a different meaning to each individual depending on how they think about the role of sourcing in the overall recruiting process.

Mobile: The Next Recruiting Revolution for 2011

Our world of sourcing/researching/recruiting is much more complicated these days than it used to be. As staffing consultants, you can’t just post an opportunity on job boards and wait for candidates to come – although some “old-schoolers” still do! (you know who you are) As technologies (Internet and mobile) are taking off, we in the staffing industry really need accept how recruiting is quite similar to a marketing campaign. Social media has forced us to think outside of our comfort areas and to go to the talent instead of them coming to us. These tools have really revolutionized the way we recruit and have helped us leverage engagement and community messaging in order to reach active and passive diverse talent.

Our recruiting strategies won’t be as straightforward as before. Whether or not you want to accept it, our industry is changing.

The World’s Biggest Social Network: The Phone

To attract talent at the top of your game, you need a winning sourcing strategy.  Since passive talent cannot be found on the job boards, create a strategy that branches out to a wide variety of networks, social media, blogs, user groups, and so forth. Throw as much into the top of the funnel as possible. The secret is to track candidates where they are in real life. There is no one stop shop. And how many times have you seen those statistics used to pitch the use of social media for recruitment?

  1. LinkedIn: 80+ million users
  2. Twitter: 100+ million users
  3. Facebook: 500+ million users

The statistics speak for themselves when it comes to why an employer should use social media to attract talent. These statistics will only increase, considering that 98% of Gen Y has joined a social network. And while I do see the significance of social recruiting, however, there’s a few more stats that I’d like to consider:**

  1. Cell Phone: 3.3 Billion users
  2. 93% of U.S. adults own a cell phone
  3. 300+ million U.S. mobile subscribers by mid-2011
  4. In 2009, 80% of US households still owned a landline phone
  5. The mobile device will be the world’s primary connection tool to the Internet in 2020.

I’d like to introduce THE PHONE as the world’s biggest social network.

Phone Sourcing Basics

How many of us remember the days before Google, LinkedIn, and other social media sites… When sourcing was a primary function of recruiters, who relied on phone sourcing as the primary means of connecting with potential candidates. When recruiters resorted to purchasing phone directories of targeted companies and then figured out how to break through a phone system to reach the desired department, often resulting in many misconnections that somehow lea to the right person.

Phone sourcing has become somewhat of a lost art form – which is interesting considering that we live in a world of connectivity yet have lost the personal touch of picking up the phone and calling, regardless if you are full cycle recruiter, a sourcer, or a researcher.

Happy Thanksgiving Sourcing

What are many of us telephone sourcers doing this Thanksgiving week and next?

We’re sourcing of course!

The holidays are EXCELLENT times to gather the information our customers are keen to garner.

The person you leave in charge at your front desk is likely to NOT be the one who normally answers the phone and rest assured, she’s much more likely to give away the keys to your kingdom than your regular receptionist.
