Software is dead – long live the cloud!

For years technology insiders have been declaring the death of traditional software. We’re bumping up against that reality as cloud-computing moves from nascent to mainstream – and it may be the best thing to happen for recruiting.

The efficiencies and convenience of cloud-based platforms are bringing new capabilities to recruiters and hiring managers by replacing the stagnated information available in traditional systems with a richer, more-dynamic user experience and faster access to accurate, up-to-date information. With cloud-based systems, users get greater flexibility for data retrieval and real-time updating of information.

Jobs2Web Acquired by SuccessFactors

Yesterday, three days after the news that SAP is acquiring SuccessFactors, came the announcement that SuccessFactors is buying recruitment marketer Jobs2Web for $110 million.

SuccessFactors says it will combine its “social, mobile, and collaborative recruiting management solution with Jobs2web’s leading recruiting marketing platform, creating an end-to-end recruiting system.”

Saturday’s SAP SuccessFactors acquisition touched off a rally Monday among the publicly traded HR tech vendors, as well as speculation about further consolidation in the industry. However, no mention was made of Jobs2Web.

Based just outside Minneapolis, Jobs2Web specializes in enhancing employer job postings to boost their findability by job seekers. The company optimizes job listings to improve their position on search results pages by, among other things, building micro-sites for each listing. Listings are also redistributed to multiple job boards, aggregation sites, and other places, with codes inserted for each listing so recruiters can identify the most effective marketing channels.

Software 101: A Guide to Web-Based Applicant Tracking Systems

The process of reviewing resumes, interviewing candidates, and hiring & on-boarding is time-consuming. When searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack, keeping organized should be easier. Thankfully, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Due largely in part to the emergence of web-based Software as a Service (SaaS), organizations of any size and budget can tap into feature-rich web-based applicant tracking software (ATS) and streamline their hiring processes.

As an alternative to traditional desktop systems, web-based software as a service puts big-time functionality at recruiting professionals’ disposal without the upfront expense of desktop implementations.

If you think you may be ready to get rid of your Rolodex and clear that stack of resumes off of your desk, here’s what you should know…

Bullhorn Reach Predicts Job Hunting Activity

BullhornReachDashboardScreenShot

A new — and for now, free — toolset from Bullhorn is getting good marks from users who have been testing it for a few months, but what’s most impressive is that it can give recruiters an early heads-up about their connections who may be preparing to “go active.”

KC Carpenter, a healthcare recruiter and co-founder of K.A. Recruiting in Boston, says the still-in-beta Bullhorn Reach is “great. It’s a huge, huge time saver for us … What would take 10 times as long, we can do with one click.”

If automating postings to social networks and optimizing them for search engines was all the service did, “it would definitely be a site I would pay for,” he says. But Radar, the tool that tips you to the likelihood one of your connections may be starting an active job hunt, is something Carpenter sees a “great for business development.”

The Sourcing Bull’s-Eye – Are You Using Your Resources or Wasting Money?

Whether or not you want to admit it, we all use some paid resources for our recruiting efforts. This could include any of the following products: job boards, resume databases, information gathering resources (like Jigsaw or Zoom Info), ATS’s, the list goes on and on. Yes – I am talking to you! I know you post jobs on Monster and CareerBuilder. I know you have purchased an applicant tracking system (that most likely is simply used as a repository for resumes with very little, if any, data organization). If we are spending money on these resources, why, then, do we so adamantly preach and train against using them when conducting candidate searches? If we’re paying for them, then why not justify the cost of using them by actually using them? And if we are not using them, then why continue to pay for them???

I learned great “Target Sourcing” in my early days of working in the world of recruiting. The idea of the candidate sourcing bull’s-eye is to guide sourcers as well as recruiters in the process of using resources effectively to find candidates.

In a 1963 speech, John F. Kennedy said, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” He was referencing the economy, and this quote has been used in support of many an economic initiative since. I work for a PR agency, and a couple of years ago I emailed a VP from a competitor agency to ask if he knew any good analyst relations candidates. We were looking for more junior level folks, so I wasn’t trying to recruit him, but thought it couldn’t hurt to ask. He replied that if he did know any, he’d obviously hire them first if he had a spot for them, but that he’d be happy to send them my way if he didn’t. This was exactly what I’d hoped he’d say. He followed that with, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” I had never heard this quote used to apply to a general profession, but I understood that he was inferring that helping each other hire the best talent is in the best interest of the analyst relations profession as a whole. I love that attitude, as it mirrors the way I think about sourcing.

Resumes Are Like Wine

In response to my post last year about the deficiencies in the search capability of many Applicant Tracking Systems, a few people commented to the fact that resumes stored in applicant tracking systems become stale and outdated over time, which may explain why ATS resume databases are often the candidate “source of last resort.”

While candidate records inevitably age over time and can become outdated, this definitely does not have to be the case.

A candidate record can only truly go “stale” if no one ever makes contact and updates the record with more current information from time to time – and it need not even be every 6 months.

Any recruiter worth their salt will attempt to maintain periodic contact with most candidates and update their information as appropriate, regardless of their job search status. This can also be automated to some extent with strong and effective CRM functionality – so even if the recruiter forgets to follow up with someone every 6 months, the CRM won’t.
