Facebook Changes Its Look; You Should Change Your Facebook ‘Recruiting Strategy,’ Too

Zuckerberg-Facebook-f8-developer-conference

The Facebook changes announced last week at the developers conference, and those in the weeks before, have major implications for the way employers use the site to brand themselves and build relationships with potential candidates and future hires.

Recruiters who now use Facebook exclusively or mostly to push out jobs will become even more marginalized by the increasing emphasis the social site is placing on engagement. Those who actively invest in courting their Facebook “fans,” offering content of value, and real conversations, will reap even greater rewards than they do now, earning their brand a place on user’s forthcoming Timelines, and the ability to broaden and measure their reach as visitors “Share” content with their own FB friends.

One of the consequences of these and the other changes Facebook is rolling out, is that it will be harder than ever for employers to compete for attention. Even before last week’s f8 conference, when the company’s most profound changes in years were announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, routine updates such as a “like” or a me-too comment, and job postings, were being moved to a ticker-style activity window on the profile page. Even more is likely to appear there as Facebook’s standards of what’s worthy of being a top post, and thus rising to the top of a person’s wall, become more stringent. (A good summary of the announced changes is available here.)

TCDisrupt

As promised, here is a video compilation from my trip to Disrupt last week in San Francisco. There were many more really interesting companies that were exhibiting at Disrupt that I simply didn’t have time to get to, but these were amongst some of the coolest. I hope you enjoy the following video.

Please check out some of the companies featured in this video. A few of them are going to be joining us in Silicon Valley in just a few short weeks for our SourceCon conference which will be taking place October 12-14!

Collaboratively Map Your Organization with WikiOrgCharts

Today, WikiOrgCharts, a company that allows for collaboratively drawing out organizational charts launched its website at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco. WikiOrgCharts claims to be the first platform on the web that allows users to pool their business contacts and collaboratively map the relationships that exist within a company into an easy-to-access organizational chart. While CogMap already ventured down this path when it launched in late 2006 and Jigsaw (now Data.com) has been allowing individuals to publicly add and modify contact information of their peers and acquaintances for years, WikiOrgCharts brings a new level of social and gaming to the table.

Disrupt-ed Sourcing

TCDisrupt

TechCrunch put forth a few contests over the last few months in which readers were asked to provide a compelling reason why they should be awarded a free pass to come to the Disrupt conference that is currently going on this week in San Francisco. Yours truly has always wanted to attend Disrupt so I gave my reason back in mid-June and was selected as one of the recipients of a free pass to the conference this week. So here I am in San Francisco, checking out some of the latest and greatest technology being launched and presented to over 2,000 attendees.

Naturally, my interest in the technology this week leans in the direction of recruiting and sourcing. And I’m not disappointed! There are some pretty neat companies here whom I’ve been able to chat with and, in some cases, catch a quick video with. There are two to me right now that stand out from a sourcing standpoint — and later this week I’ll share a video from some of the other cool companies I’ve chatted with.

The two companies that caught my eye early this week are MindJet and Quixey.

Melbourne Hosts Second Sourcing Event in Australia for 2011

ATC2011

It’s been just over a week since ATC SourcEvent 2011 in Melbourne, Australia.  I originally intended to post up something a lot sooner, but there was just so much information to digest (not to mention the amount of work I had on my desk that I needed to catch up on) that I decided to take some time out for it to all settle in. The story continues…

Australia’s second sourcing event was hosted by the Australasian Talent Conference. Since 2007, they have been a key driver in providing Australasia with the latest buzz and best practices in recruitment. As you’d expect, their attendees normally consist of recruiters (in-house, agency, and executive search) and this year’s inaugural sourcing event did not disappoint. This offered an excellent opportunity for the greater recruitment community to learn more about sourcing and the benefits it can bring to the business.

Hardcore Sourcing: An Interview with Mike Notaro

Mike Notaro mosaic

Some might say that Sourcing is the kind of profession that attracts the passionate; fanatics, devotees, and life-long learners.

Take Mike Notaro, for example.

He was winner of the AIRS Extreme Sourcing Challenge in 2007, and in 2007 and and 2008 he was crowned the Sourcecon Grandmaster.

“Hardcore” is the word that comes to mind. Mike is known for sourcing innovation, and feels strongly about exploring new ideas, tactics, and tools:

Things are changing and evolving so rapidly that it’s nearly impossible to stay with the curve, let alone get ahead of it. With so much going on, you should really have something new almost every day to talk about with your colleagues and co-workers. (SourceCon, April 2010)

Automation 201 is the theme of Mike’s SourceCon presentation – a follow-up to his 2010 SourceCon presentation. I’m pretty certain we will all benefit from his passion and learn something new in Silicon Valley.

The Australasian Sourcing Summit: Another Point of View

In December 2007, inspired by gatherings of sourcers overseas and groups like the Association of Executive Search Consultants, I started a local group for sourcers in Australia and New Zealand. At the time, sourcing in Australia was a fairly new phenomenon. The group was set up as a place for people who loved Internet search to get together to talk about topics such as new techniques, challenges, and innovation. I also wanted to see sourcing become known as a viable career path in the recruitment industry and treated like the specialist role that it is rather than a support role.

So this year when I was approached by Phillip Tusing of Destination Talent to help him organise an event around sourcing I jumped at the chance. The industry here has grown a lot in the five years since I started working in it and there is currently quite a bit of interest in sourcing as well as some successful sourcing throughout the country.

There was a diverse range of topics covered throughout the event. Looking back I had to ask myself what do Gollum, Kanban walls, and Charlie Sheen have to do with sourcing, as they all got mentions. These topics and more are really indicative of the holistic focus the event had. More on that later…

There were a couple of presentations in particular that, when combined, seem to cover the broad range of sourcing.

How to Get Your Boss to Let You Come to SourceCon: Making a Case to Attend

SourceCon

Obviously I’m biased, but I think SourceCon is the best, most comprehensive sourcing conference out there. Why? Well, I’ll bet you didn’t know that while I’ve been in charge of the SourceCon website/newsletter for four years now, I did so from 2007-2010 on a voluntary basis. That’s right — I believed in the mission and purpose of SourceCon so much that I did it for free for three years — in addition to working full-time. I think that anyone who touches sourcing in a recruitment organization can stand to benefit from being amongst other sourcing professionals and learning in a collaborative environment such as the kind provided at the SourceCon conferences.

And it even says on the event site — there’s something for everyone. There will be high-level leadership sessions, tactical hands-on workshops, and new tool introductions to satisfy everyone from the greenest sourcer to the most seasoned veteran; from the ‘lone wolf’ individual contributor to the global sourcing leader.

But since I know my (biased) opinion simply isn’t enough, I want to provide you with some tools to help make a compelling case to your boss to attend the conference. In your heart, I know that you understand the value of attending SourceCon — but I also know that it isn’t always easy to convey that understanding to your higher-ups.
