Why Blame Social Media? Employee “Poaching” Has Been Going On Forever

I said it often over at our sister publication TLNT: social media is an extension of the way we build relationships. Sure, it might change a few of the dynamics or the ease of which those relationships can be had. But many of the same principles that make people successful at building relationships and getting things done in real life are the same ones that are successful online.

Social media is a game changer in many ways but it is still hard to game human nature and ability. And when it is blamed for something that was going on before its time, there’s usually a counter-story there.

That’s why I was a bit amused when I saw an article saying that social media has enabled the poaching of employees.

Harnessing the Power of Social Media – Without the Headache

The Kony 2012 film has more than 87 million hits on YouTube. Invisible Children, Inc. has more than 3.2 million members on Facebook.  Kony 2012 – reminiscent of a presidential campaign – aimed to make a heinous warlord famous so that his crimes would be known and, ultimately, he would be captured. It took a little known cause to mainstream awareness in less than a week.  How did they do it? Kony 2012 harnessed the power of social media and personal networks in a big way.

Just like advocacy has changed, so has the business of recruiting. The question is no longer if social media is part of the recruitment strategy but instead, how it can be best used to attract the right candidates. Social media can be time and resource-intensive, especially with so many platforms to manage and monitor; but there is a way to harness its power without the headache: use the right technology, put candidates in control and engage an army of referrers.

Lies, Damn Lies and Social Network Statistics

Did you hear? Pinterest is more popular than LinkedIn. And by popular, we mean by traffic, not by number of members. It might be better for driving revenue than either Facebook or Twitter. And Facebook acquired Instagram to beat Pinterest so they can maintain their popularity (in both number of members and web traffic popularity).

And all of this helps you how? Sure, you could source using Pinterest. You can start connecting with people on Instagram too, hoping to find the next purple squirrel. More logically, you could use these as branding or marketing channels. Or you can get socially influential people in your organization engaged with it as a marketing exercise.

But in the tradition of SourceCon, it is time again to look beyond the obvious and question what exactly are we doing with all of this information? And more critically, what is important, real and worth worrying about.

LinkedIn is still a major player when it comes to finding and sourcing potential employees. But among those 150 million users, who is highly represented on LinkedIn and who still lags behind?

The question is an important one as you look at where you should spend time as a sourcer or recruiter. 150 million members is a lot of people but it’s not close to everyone. If you know you’ll have a better chance finding a particular person in an industry, you might focus more or less time on that particular source.

So who exactly is on LinkedIn?

The Best of SourceCon 2011, #4 — Five Fatal Social Recruiting Mistakes

Editor’s note: Shaly Steckerl’s article was the 4th most popular article on SourceCon in 2011. It originally ran in September.

Our Recruitment Genome Project demonstrated that 85% of surveyed staffing leaders utilize Social Recruiting avenues yet 70% of them lack any form of strategy. With all the choices available and potential legal, audit, or regulatory entanglements many recruitment leaders are confused or even paralyzed by fear. Hiring organizations know the recruitment world has made a dramatic shift, and recruiters know they need to meet prospects where they already are, but without a clear strategy many end up jumping blindly into social recruiting and make easily avoidable mistakes.

If you think the best way to recruit with social media is feeding your jobs RSS feed through Twitter but then get distracted with new entries into the social networking space such as Google+, we wrote this series just for you and hope this helps you avoid an epic #fail by falling victim to some of the most common mistakes.

SC tech

Those of you who attended SourceCon two weeks ago may have noticed a couple of new technologies we used during the conference. Since we are geared more toward the “nerdy” side of recruiting, we wanted to try out some new things in an attempt to make your conference experience a little richer.

As a little present for those of you who weren’t there in person and a supplement to those of you who were, today I am giving you a quick snapshot of the tools we incorporated into the conference experience: Holler, Vizibility, and Hashcaster.

Getting to know Knod.es: A Quick Way to Search Your Networks

It’s eminent that recruiters make the best networkers. Being the face of a company and telling its story to potential prospects is part of our vocation. Attending job fairs, networking events, and mixers allow us to mingle with passive candidates and offers exposure to the community.

With Recruitment 3.0, social networking allows us to have access to millions of people and lets us easily grow our talent pipeline. Today, we spend the majority of our day searching for candidates on the most popular social media sites. LinkedIn has become our playground and building our network is an absolute necessity.

Without a doubt, recruiters should be the most connected users on LinkedIn or any other social media site. I actually feel bad for my non-recruiting friends as their LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter feeds have become over-saturated with my latest connections, job announcements, and recruiting news articles.

The words “sourcing” and “hiring” have become part of my friend’s vocabulary. I love reading their responses to my social media updates:

Obviously, my status updates and constant jabber about sourcing has become a little obnoxious to others. As a result, I stumbled upon a new site that makes it easy to reach out to your entire social network without status updates or blasting a tweet.

Knod.es, product of SnapGoods, is a new site that searches your LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook connections that are most likely to have an answer to your question or topic.

Non-Standard Descriptors and the Role They Play in Social Media

Sourcing has always been a significant component in the recruiting lifecycle. However, in recent years, sourcing has taken a giant step into the forefront and has become recognized as the solid foundation upon which successful recruiting rests in order to identify and secure top-level talent, no matter what industry you may be supporting.

These days, it seems as if nearly everyone from CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, to inventors in various fields, to the grandmother of your best friend has a Facebook page, a LinkedIn profile, or a Twitter account.

Although some people are still discovering and testing the waters of the Twitterverse, a diverse and large population spanning nearly all industry segments has already fully jumped on to the real-time messaging bandwagon in order to share information or blurt out a piece of nonsense rolling around in their head.

Sourcing and Social Media Censorship in China

“Everything that helps information flow is good for society.”

Words spoken by Wang Xing, founder of the site known today as RenRen, a Chinese Facebook “clone.” Yet RenRen blocks its users from sharing links to certain competitors in social and group-buying (it owns Nuomi.com, one of China’s best-known group buying websites) by returning the error message: “Posting failed, this news contains unsuitable content, please review it,” when users attempt to post a link to sites like Meituan or Mi Liao, for example.

On May 4, 2011, RenRen went public in the NYSE, listing as RENN and raising $743.4 million in the first hours of its IPO. Since that day, RENN value has plummeted by over 50%.

Recently, news came out that Hong Kong-Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo will soon launch in English, making it a potential rival to Twitter. And we, of course, are interested in a potential stir-up…
