How to Source for Software Developers, Who are Willing to Relocate

The reality is that almost 216 million people, about 3% of the world’s population live outside their countries… and some software engineers are among them. Tech companies always seek for new talent, yet their channels are often limited to local developers only. This is especially true for companies established in thinly populated towns.

I’d like to share with you some useful tips how to source for genius software developers outside your country in this article. By following a given algorithm, you may easily enrich your team with rock-stars and A players.




Type “Relocate”or “Relocation” in the LinkedIn search. Sometimes LinkedIn limits the number of search results, so click “Show all results”


As much as it’s simple to type “Relocate” or “Relocation“, you may also want to narrow down the searched results by adding a few more criteria.

  • You can specify the relative Industry (Computer Games, Information Services, Information Technology and Services, Internet, Software Development, Program Development);
  • You can also specify the Location (Argentina for example);
  • Add the Programming Language – for example, “Java”.

Try this search and LinkedIn will come up with some very worthwhile profiles.

I guess, most of you know that Slideshare has become a part of LinkedIn. Each uploaded to LinkedIn CV is automatically uploaded to SlideShare (unless you put a tick against “Don’t upload to SlideShare”). This way, all CVs of the candidates who consider relocation will be available through the search in SlideShare, but LinkedIn. The list might be slightly reduced, but the profiles should be much more worthwhile.

To do so, we’re going to use simple queries in Google with “Relocate” or “Relocation” and needed programming language. The most precise results are achieved when the search is narrowed down by adding “intitle:resume” or “intitle:cv

For example:

In order to see only relevant CVs of those candidates who’re still looking for a job, you can always specify the period of time during which the CVs have been uploaded (for example, 6-12 months). Though, most people who’re obsessed with an idea of moving abroad, quite often wait for years to get a job offer.

To see the most recent results, use “Search Tools” button and “Sorted by Date“.

Xing is a German version of popular LinkedIn which can be successfully used as a channel to hunt for experienced software developers. Those candidates who choose Europe and/or Germany as a relocation destination, are more likely create their profiles CVs on Xing. Similar to LinkedIn, use the Advanced search that is only open for premium members. You’d need to pre-pay $9 monthly subscription. Compared to LinkedIn, this wouldn’t wound your budget as much.

Type in the Advanced Search:

  • Wants – “Relocate” or “Relocation”
  • Industry – “Internet and IT”

The keyword “Relocate” has brought me 93 profiles while “Relocation” has given 212. This number is not huge. However, If you’ve got 1-2 “hard-to-close” positions, Xing will surely come in handy.

A lot of people outside the country who’d like to relocate to Germany (sometimes even Northern Europe) register at Xing. That’s probably the most reasonable point why a search on Xing shouldn’t be skipped.




Use the same keywords “Relocate” and “Relocation” and search via Google. Stackoverflow is a good platform on the whole, but mostly helpful for seeking users registered at career section ( and screening regular members who’re looking for an opportunity to relocate (

AngelList is a popular website among the owners of startups, investors and job-seekers, looking to join a startup. If you go on AngelList, you’ll find 230k users who’ve claimed to be software developers and 80k designers. However, some of them would be CTOs, founders, and investors, so the actual number is considerably less. I guess, you’ll be able to spot no more than 20-30% of real software developers among the searched profiles.

AngelList can be used without registration, yet, their search is still not comparable with LinkedIn.

Most software engineers link their LinkedIn accounts with AngelList or simply source them via Google.


logo – is the most “human-oriented” recruiting agency aimed to support software developers around the world, find great tech jobs across Europe and assist during the relocation process (arranging working visa, renting an apartment, and even moving a cat).
